From Australian Honorary Consul, St Petersburg

May 2015

Dear Visitor!

Melbourne and St.Petersburg are 15,000 km apart, so they couldn’t be much further away from each other, however there’s so much in common between these two beautiful sister cities.

Melbourne is Australia’s second largest city; and St.Petersburg is Russia’s second one too. Both are major ports. Melbourne’s population at 4.4 million is almost as much as St.Petersburg’s. Also, both are quite young cities – 180 and 312 years respectively.

But as far as the sister city relationship goes, this has over the last 26 years, emphasised their citizens’ love of culture - music, art, architecture. From time to time musicians – even whole orchestras – and art exhibitions from each city have visited the other city to the delight of St.Petersburgers and Melburnians alike.

The Sister City logo combines the City of Melbourne leaf, representing Melbourne’s world famous parks and gardens with St.Peterburg’s famous landmark spire of the Peter and Paul Fortress Cathedral. The colour scheme echoes the twilight of St.Petersburg during the White Nights.

Australia being a land of immigrants, Melbourne has a large Russian community: some 16,500 claim Russian ethnicity and 62,000 speak Russian, and they contribute enormously to the cultural and business life of the city.

It’s been my privilege as an Australian citizen and as Australia’s first-ever diplomatic representative in St.Petersburg, to have worked with my colleagues in the St.Petersburg City Government always in a warm and friendly atmosphere these past thirteen years, watching the sister city link, established in 1989, leading to the two cities appreciating each other more and more. This was the first such agreement between an Australian and a Russian city.

We are united by the strength of our links and our common understanding. May the Melbourne – St.Petersburg sister city relationship flourish!

Sebastian Zinovieff FitzLyon

Australian Honorary Consul, St.Petersburg
